CEBU, Philippines — A man was beaten up by concerned citizens and arrested by police after he took his own girlfriend hostage in Consolacion town Monday evening.

Gerald Malagar, 37, a resident of Sitio Looc, Barangay Poblacion, Liloan took hostage his girlfriend Maricel Illustrisimo, 36, after she told him she wanted to end their relationship which reportedly started in 2011.

Police Officer 3 Zeus Veloso of Consolacion police said that Malagar told police that it was his love for his girlfriend that led him to take her hostage.

“Dako kaayo ni’g gusto ang suspek sa babaye. Iya gyud daw gitarong ba. Dili man sad siya hubog,” said Veloso.

According to police report, Malagar went to the boarding house rented by Illustrisimo in Purok 4, Barangay Nangka. The two had a talk and Illustrisimo told Malagar she was breaking up with him.

Unable to accept his girlfriend’s decision, Malagar pointed a knife at her. Illustrisimo tried to take the knife away from him, but was overpowered by the suspect and dragged into a room.

Illustrisimo sustained a minor wound to her hands while resisting Malagar.

She was held hostage for over half an hour before barangay tanods arrived on the scene.

Seeing the tanods, Malagar did not put up a fight and surrendered his weapon. After he surrendered, the angry relatives of Illustrisimo and some neighbors started beating him.

Police Officer 3 Zeus Veloso, of Consolacion police said that when they arrived at the area, the tanods of Barangay Nangka already had Malagar in custody.

Malagar was rushed to the hospital by police for treatment.

Veloso said that Illustrisimo is determined to file a case against Malagar. (FREEMAN)
