CEBU, Philippines – An inmate at the Cebu City Jail was wounded after he was shot by a jail guard who saw him attempting to escape the jail facility yesterday.

Cebu City Jail Warden Superintendent Arnel Peralta told The FREEMAN that Johnson Kintanar, 31, from San Jose, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City attempted the escape at 7: 40 a.m.

"Nisaka sa tower 6, then nilayat sa female dorm then niagi sa may water tank," he said.

It was Senior Police Officer 1 Jason Azarcon who noticed Kintanar escaping and alerted the other jail guards.

"Gigukod namo siya then nag warning shot, unya nidagan man og padayon mao tong natiil," Peralta narrated.

Kintanar sustained a gunshot wound on his left foot. Peralta said that the wound is not life-threatening, but said they will request for medical attention for Kintanar from court as soon as possible.

Kintanar faces four qualified theft charges and another for carnapping.

After he was recaptured, Kintanar confessed that he wanted to escape from the city jail after his life was threatened by a fellow inmate.

"Sa initial investigation nato gitagaan og kwarta siya sa ilahang kumander-kumander para makasulod ang sigarilyo diri. Unya nagasto man niya ang P4,000, unya wala siya'y ibayad. Mao na ng gibaharan siya," Peralta further said.

Peralta said he will make a request to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology -7 for enhancement of the security in the city jail facility so that the same incident could not happen again in the future. —/JBB (FREEMAN)
