Cebu Province to host youth tourism summit

CEBU, Philippines - Over 400 youths will convene two weeks from now in a summit intended to advance the sustainable tourism of Cebu, said Cebu Provincial Tourism Officer Joselito "Boboi" Costas.

The event called "Cebu Youth 4 Tourism Summit" has a theme "Wired and Free".

Costas said that the younger generations are catalysts for change in improving and developing Cebu's tourism.

"The youth are a fount of talent that if tapped properly, would serve as catalyst and prime movers in effecting positive change," Costas said.

The participants who are students from selected schools and youths endorsed by different tourism offices of Cebu towns and component cities will engage in activities and discussions on sustainable tourism, its development as well as the impact of travel and tourism in society and environment.

The summit will be held at SM Seaside City on August 21. The first 150 participants to register online will receive freebies such as LTE-ready cellphones and wi-fi sticks.

At least six speakers will be invited including Cebu Provincial Human Resource Management Office head Bonifer "Bhobby Nacorda, and Canadian travel blogger Kyle "Kulas" Jennerman.

Nacorda will discuss about careers on tourism industry while Jennerman will share about travel story-telling.

Costas said the event is a "unique opportunity" to explore and highlight the potential of Cebu tourism and the participants will identify on how they would contribute to sustainable tourism.

"(They will be) mindful of how responsible travel contribute to sustainable development of our beloved Cebu," he said.

The whole day event will have a launching of Technology, Research, and Innovation for People, Prosperity, and Planet Sustainability or "TRIPPS" – a search for the best app using digital technology in giving solutions to issues concerning Cebu tourism, in partnership of Smart Communications, Inc.

Costas shared that tourism is the biggest industry in the world that contributes to employment.

"As one of the longest and fastest-growing socio-economic sectors of our times, tourism can stimulate economic growth, create decent jobs and business opportunities, helping millions of people escape poverty and improve their livelihood," Costas added.

At the end of the event, a manifesto will be signed by participants, a proof of their commitment in developing sustainable tourism.

Costas said the activity is in line with this year's "International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development". (FREEMAN)
