Mandaue to privatize garbage collection

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City Mayor Gabriel Luis “Luigi” Quisumbing has announced that the city government will privatize its garbage collection starting next year.
Quisumbing said it is cheaper for the government to privatize garbage collection rather than buy and maintain garbage trucks.
"In the long run it will be cheaper. No need for the city to procure new dump trucks, the lubricants as well as the maintenance of the dump trucks," Quisumbing said.
Quisumbing said that the maintenance and operations of dump trucks will be borne by the private contractor.
"It will be the city who shall pay for the collection of garbage not the residents who shall be paying for it," the mayor said.
Vice Mayor Carlo Pontico Fortuna said the city collects at least 240 tons of garbage daily. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
