Lightning kills old woman, injures son in Santa Fe town

Ermida Q. Moradas - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A 60-year-old woman died while her son was injured after they were hit by lightning yesterday morning in Barangay Pooc, Santa Fe, Cebu.

Marina Necesario, resident of Barangay Langob, was on board a wooden boat together with her two sons when the lightning struck them. They were already maneuvering to dock on the shores when the incident happened. Rolly, 39, suffered first degree burns while his brother Ranil was spared.

Rolly told The FREEMAN that his mother was sitting in front of him while his brother was on the other side of the boat.

He recalled seeing two lightning strikes — the second caught them.

Rolly said they immediately docked and asked for help.

Rolly was rushed to Bantayan District Hospital where he is now recovering.

“Wala ra’y angayan nga ikabalaka, first degree burns ra ang naangkon niya,” said Dr. Lee Fua, Rolly’s attending physician. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
