Canadian killed in car crash
CEBU, Philippines - Sleepiness was blamed for death of a 30-year-old Canadian national after his car crashed into cement barrier along the National Road in Barangay Balabagon, Moalboal, around 4:30 a.m. yesterday.
Stephen Georgitsopoulos was driving a black Honda HRV heading to Badian when the accident happened. He was with two other male passengers, Doji Cleopas and Teresito Quilestino, both friends of his Filipina stepmother.
According to Police Officer 2 Jerome Abrataldo, Georgitsopoulos was sleepy after a lot of activities in Moalboal the day before and nodded behind the wheel. As the car reached a curved part of the road, instead of turning with the curve the car drove straight through and crashed into the cement barrier. It cleared barrier and reportedly flipped over twice before it stopping on flat ground.
Responding policemen arrived at the scene of the incident together with a medical team and transported the victims to the Badian District Hospital.
Georgitsopoulos later died of his injuries while his two passengers are still confined. —/BRP (FREEMAN)
