Hope is seeing light at the end of the tunnel

LIFE'S ESSENCE - Katherine R. Oyson - The Freeman

According to American drama series Grey’s Anatomy, "When the worst case scenario comes true, clinging to hope is all that we have left.”

Hope is the only thing that we have when we are confronted with Herculean challenges in life like health issues, financial problems, unemployment, marital problems, love relationship and other string of trials that may come our way.

Here’s a story I would like to share with you written by Joseph Iregbu who  bounced back from the quagmire of a hopeless situation. "Life can be fair and tough – people are broken, people are going through challenging situations, people are struggling to feed their families, people are dropping out of school, people are hurting from wrong relationships, people are dying every day, people are struggling to keep up with their mortgage payments and  the banks are threatening, people are waking up each day only to realize their pension pot is drying up, people are tired…really tired, people are losing hope. I’ve been there before.

"I spent my teenage years in Lagos, Nigeria. Born to a  father I lost 11 days after my 13th birthday and a mother with 5 children. I lived 645KM away from my family. The good life changed when I lost my father to asthma and diabetes. Everything changed. We lost everything! The years that followed would become my worst nightmare. Life was tough for me. I nurtured a dream to go to university abroad. Many scorned me for it. So they laughed. Only a few listened and even a few supported me. I remained resolute in my hope. I refused to give up. And my story changed. I graduated with First class honors degree in Computer Science, achieved the best results at faculty level, published two books and speak at conference…”

The message of the story is that hope is the only rope that we can hold on to – having an optimistic view that no matter how unbearable and hopeless the situation may appear to be, we have to  bear in mind that there’s still life, there’s still hope – that the situation will become better no matter what it costs.

We should all be hopeful despite of the odds that we are facing. Here are some reasons why we should hold on to hope as pointed out by www.mindbodygreen.com:

You have hope anyway. Even the most pessimistic person has a tiny sprout of hope inside of them, or they wouldn’t keep on going. The key is recognizing the natural existence of hope, and not resisting it.

Hope inspires forward action instead of stagnation. Without hope, you will accept limitations and sit in suffering. By allowing yourself to hope, you can somehow lift yourself higher. You will find yourself taking all kinds of forward action, instead of remaining powerless and stagnant in the darkness of suffering.

Hope costs nothing. As the book "TouchPoints of Hope" declares, “The Lord  Himself is the source of hope. His character is unchanging, His love is steadfast, His promises will all come true, and His omnipotence  determines our future.”
