CEBU, Philippines - The 67,300 registered senior citizens in Cebu City have already received the final tranche of their financial assistance from the city government for this year.

Lea Japson, head of the City's Department of Social Welfare and Services, said they just released P2,000 each to all senior citizens, completing the annual P12,000 financial assistance to the elderly.

Yesterday, Japson said several City Hall employees were deployed to distribute the last tranche of the aid.

"Smooth ra atong pag-distribute. Wala'y problema tanan. Successful ra siya. It would be a happy and Merry Christmas for our senior citizens gyud," she said.

However, Apas Barangay Captain Ramil Ayuman said he received several complaints from senior citizens in his barangay on the venue of the distribution.

Ayuman said he booked the barangay's gym so that senior citizens will not be inconvenienced in going to other areas in the barangay.

"Naka-book nako daan para anha lang sa gym. Naa gani untay naka una og book pero akong gipa-transfer kay i-prioritize ang atong senior citizens. Ako'y ni-schedule gyud sa gym para dili ma-issue nga wala ko nisugot," he said.

However, he said the distribution took place in the barangay's elementary school, which was muddy and flooded.

Ayuman believes the current administration wants to put him in a bad light.

"Murag himoon gyod ko nilang bati. Pwerteng yawyaw sa mga senior kay lapok kaayo didto. Kasabot man ko nga nay mga wanna be politicians pero dili unta apilon ning atong mga senior oy. Ilang lisodlisoron, unya akoy mabati," he said.

Ayuman disclosed that the gym was open the whole day for the distribution, but they did not use it.

Japson clarified though that the city government has pure and clean intentions in the provision of the aid, as well as choosing the venue where the distribution would take place.

She explained that they decided to change the ve-nue of the distribution in Barangay Apas because of unforeseen concerns in the past distributions.

"Sa first nga distribution, okay ra gyod. Pag ikaduha dinha sa gym gihapon, half ra sa area among nagamit so gadasok ang mga senior. Maong nananghid mi sa DepEd and sa school nga ang skwelahan ang among gamiton," she said.

Japson said they did not anticipate that it will rain, which caused the school to be muddy and flooded. (FREEMAN)
