CEBU, Philippines - The Bureau of Fire Protection-7 has reminded the public to be cautious in charging their cellular phones.

The warning was issued following a fire incident in Bayabas Extension, Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City shortly before noon yesterday that was allegedly caused by a cellphone that was left attended while charging.

“Atong pahimangno mag-charge ta sa atong cellphone, ato lang gyod bantayan, di biyaan. Ibutang lang ang phone sa semento,” said Senior Fire Officer 2 Roland Delos Reyes.

He said the fire started from the house of Macky Lurica and razed the two other neighboring houses owned by his relatives. A cellphone was allegedly left charging while it was left on a mattress.

Delos Reyes said the fire alarm was received at 11:03 a.m. and was placed under control 10 minutes later.

Melchor Zuniga, one of the house owners, said he was at the church when he received a call that his house was hit by fire. He hurriedly went home only to witness the conflagration. Zuniga said they will have to stay with his relatives temporarily.

It was the second fire incident that hit Cebu City in less than 24 hours, the first was in Barangay Apas Monday afternoon. The fire destroyed 60 houses with damage estimated at more than P500, 000.

A gas stove explosion inside the house of Gemma Balatong reportedly started the fire. The incident also killed a blind woman who was trapped inside her room. The victim was identified as Natividad Cabalan, 80. (FREEMAN)
