Telco, power companies asked to fix sagging lines

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City Council has asked the Visayan Electric Company and telephone and cable companies to correct hazardous wires and posts along the city's streets to prevent accidents.

Last Wednesday afternoon, City Councilor Malcolm Sanchez called up the attention of VECO and the telecommunication companies over sagging and leaning posts along B. Ceniza Street in Barangay Mantuyong.

"The area is with heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic due to the presence of wet market and sagging wires are considered street hazard and if not rectified soonest may lead to untoward incidents involving life and property," Sanchez said.

Sanchez also cited the leaning post along A. Del Rosario and Conrado Seno streets.

Sanchez's resolution was approved by the council without any objections. He said that with the approval of his resolution, the telecommunication companies and VECO will submit to them a certificate of completed repair or any similar documents attesting that the works had been completed.

Sanchez further suggested for utility companies to conduct serious study on the possible shift from aerial installation to underground cabling within the next five years.

Meanwhile, the City Council has referred to the Office of the City Administrator for appropriate action a petition by residents of Barangay Looc over their protest against a warehouse in their area.

In a Barangay Looc Resolution No. 083, series of 2016, the barangay is requesting the City Council to disallow the use of a vacant lot at the back of Kishi Plastic and Precision Manufacturing as a warehouse/storage area for container vans.

"The Barangay Looc Council saw the importance to help the residence with the campaign against the utilization of the areas as warehouse and storage for container van," the resolution read.

Vice Mayor Carlo Pontico Fortuna, the council presiding officer, said they will refer the matter to city administrator Danilo Almendras who will come up with a recommendation before the Office of the Mayor. (FREEMAN)
