Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Senior citizens in Mandaue City have started receiving the second installment of their financial assistance from City Hall.

Mayor Luigi Quisumbing said the distribution will be done in five working days. It started last Monday and will be finished by Friday.

Based on the records from the city’s Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs, there are 16,708 senior citizens in the city who will receive the P2,000 cash aid this month.

Under the city ordinance, each senior citizen will annually receive P6,000 financial assistance from the city government which will be given in three installments. The first was supposed to be given in April but because of the election ban, it was moved to May; the second this month; and the last on December.

Today, senior citizens from barangays Tipolo, Banilad, Subangdaku, Casuntingan and Bakilid will be getting their cash aid. On Thursday, receiving seniors are from barangays Alang-alang, Umapad, Opao, Looc, Labogon and Pakna-an and on Friday, from barangays Tabok, Pagsabungan, Tingub, Cubacub, Casili and Tawason.

The OSCA is reminding the beneficiaries not to forget their senior citizens identification cards.

Quisumbing has promised to raise the financial assistance to the senior citizens by P500 to P1,000 but clarified that the increase will depend on the revenue the city generates.

The mayor also said he will schedule a “Dedicated Senior Citizen Health Days” at the City Health Office where doctors and their staff will schedule home visits to the elderly for checkups and consultations. (FREEMAN)
