Operation of Talisay City abattoir continues – Gullas

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas said the city’s slaughterhouse will continue its operation even if their application for the renewal of its “double A” accreditation is still on the process.

Gullas said he is confident that the National Meat Inspection Services (NMIS) will soon renew the slaughterhouse’s accreditation, which has currently been downgraded to “single A.”

“Dili kaayo dako ang trabahuon. We will be able to retain the double A status, I am very positive nga we will get a renewed status, it’s just a matter of time” Gullas said.

In an earlier report, Gullas has welcomed in his city meat suppliers from Cebu City who requested to operate in Talisay after Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced to close the city’s own abattoir.

The suppliers reportedly chose Talisay because of its “double A” accreditation by the NMIS. The “double A” rating means that the meat coming from the facility may be sold in any parts of the country.

However, Alice Utlang, head of Cebu City’s Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries, said they checked the records and found out that the accreditation of Talisay abattoir’s has been downgraded to “single A.”

With this, Utlang said they talked with the management of Sunpride Foods Incorporated to accommodate the city’s meat suppliers.

But according to Gullas, this did not alarm meat suppliers from Cebu City who said they are still willing to operate in Talisay.

The mayor added that this will not affect them since their slaughterhouse has all the equipment as well as the facilities.

“Actually, the city people had the choice between Talisay and Sunpride, they choose Talisay, padayon. In fact, they are very enthusiastic to be here with us, especially duna’y lugar nga dako usab para kanila,” he said. (FREEMAN)
