Navarro’s service record recognized

Jean Marvette A. Demecillo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Council has passed a resolution recognizing the 54 years of “exemplary and unblemished” public service of the late Punta Princesa Barangay Captain Jose Navarro.

The City Council approved en masse the resolution sponsored by Councilors Nendell Hanz Abella and Phillip Zafra, president of the Association of Barangay Councils.

“During his entire stint in public service, the late barangay Chairman Jose Navarro has exuded and lived up to the true meaning of a dedicated public servant with an unblemished record that his family and friends should be proud of,” read the resolution.

By operation of law, Zafra said that number one Councilman Restituto Atillo will replace Navarro as barangay chairman. Navarro passed away last Monday due to liver cancer. His wake is at the Lourdes Parish Chapel in Punta Princesa.

Navarro will be laid to rest on August 28 at 1 p.m. at Cebu Evergreen Memorial Park.

Zafra said Atillo could take his oath of office to any administering officers. As for the vacancy in the seat of the barangay councilman, Zafra said the barangay council will endorse a name to Mayor Tomas Osmeña for his appointment.

Zafra said Navarro has served his constituents in the barangay as councilor since 1962 to 1971 and as barangay chairman since 1972 to 2007 and 2010 to 2016.

Navarro used to be the president of the ABC Cebu City Chapter from 1997 to 2002 and also a board of director of ABC from 2013 up to 2016.

“His demise is true a painful and grieving moment for the family, relatives, friends and barangay constituents. The Sangguniang Panglungsod of Cebu City mourns and grieves his death and hereby joins his family, relatives and friends in prayer for the eternal repose of his soul,” read the resolution. (FREEMAN)
