EMB-7 urges LGUs to submit sewerage plans

May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas is requesting all local government units to submit the status of their respective sewerage management plans to be integrated in the development of a master plan of the central Cebu river basin.

EMB-7 Director William Cuñado asked all concerned LGUs to provide them with the updated sewerage plans as well as other relevant data relative to the river basin.

“This information will help in the updating of the master plan,” read Cuñado’s letter dated June 18, 2016 addressed Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

Dr. Eddie Llamedo, chief of DENR-7 Regional Public Affairs Office, said the Central Cebu River Basin covers more than 40 LGUs.

He added the river basin covers more than 68,000 hectares traversing four major watersheds: Mananga, Lusaran, Coastal, and Lusaran-Combado.

“There had been problems or concerns as regards to inadequate or absence of sewerage system among the local government units. Most of the households have not been connected to a sewerage system or septage facility,” Llamedo said in a text message to The Freeman.

Llamedo emphasized that the absence of septage facility threatens Cebu’s groundwater supply of contamination. (FREEMAN)
