Mandaue brgy to require firms to maintain ramps

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Business owners operating along the national roads in Barangay Alang-Alang, Mandaue City will be required to maintain and repair the ramps fronting their respective establishment as prerequisite in the issuance of business permit.

The Barangay Council has passed an ordinance requiring all establishments along UN Avenue, Plaridel Street, A.C. Cortes Avenue with access to the road to install, repair, and maintain their entry and exit point ramps as prerequisite in the issuance of barangay business permit.

The ordinance is still up for review and approval of the Mandaue City Council. But outgoing Ma-yor Jonas Cortes sees no problem with the ordinance.

Councilman Kristian Cortes, chairman of the committee on infrastructure, said the UN Avenue, Plaridel Street and A.C. Cortes Avenue are major thoroughfares with heavy volume of vehicles and pedestrians.

The stretch is saturated with business establishments and private residences needing access to the national road.

Under the barangay ordinance, the business establishment operating in the area must submit its design plan to be approved by the barangay captain or the kagawad in-charge of infrastructure accompanying their request for barangay clearance for business permit renewal.

The barangay will designate agent to inspect and make appropriate list of business establishments with dilapidated, damaged, unrepaired entrance and exit ramps along the U.N. Avenue, Plaridel Street and AC Cortes Avenue that are not in compliance with the ordinance to the city engineering office for their immediate action.

Any business establishment found violating the ordinance will be summoned and a penalty of P1,500 will be imposed. A fine of P3,000 will be imposed on business establishment that fails to appear in the second summon.

Failure to pay the penalties and repair the entry/exit ramps will be ground for the non-issuance of barangay clearance and or revocation of existing permit. The ordinance, if approved, will take effect next year.  (FREEMAN)
