CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Labor and Employment-7 in coordination with the Occupational Safety and Health Center-7 has produced two winners for the 10th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) Regional Level Championship.

Knowles Electronics (Philippines) Corporation was recognized as the regional champion under the institutional category and Engineer Oliver Z. Abelgas as the regional champion under the individual category.

Both were recognized and awarded by outgoing Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baloz in her recent visit to Cebu.

The GKK is a national award given by the DOLE in recognition of the outstanding achievements of establishments and individuals in terms of responding to the safety and health needs of workers, workplaces and community.

In a statement, DOLE-7 director Exequiel Sarcauga said that GKK is a component of the Zero Accident Program which is one of the flagship programs of the Department.

The Knowles Electronics (Philippines) Corporation, which operations have been transferred to the new Greenfield building at the Cebu Light Industrial Park in Lapu-Lapu City, is a pioneer in the acoustic industry.

Abelgas, on the other hand, is a registered mechanical engineer by profession but is now connected with Knowles as an Environment Health and Safety (EHS) manager.

Engineer Gines Timosa of the OSHC-7 said in the same statement that the company provides the acoustic backbone to smartphones, tablets, headsets, laptops and other electronic products, as well as acoustic solutions for hearing aids and oscillators and capacitors used in broad range of electronic equipment.

On the other hand, Abelgas' contributions as part of the management team were instrumental for the crafting of the vision and mission of the company with EHS being the topmost priority.

"We are happy that we have representatives this year to represent the region in the 10th GKK National Championship," said Sarcauga. (FREEMAN)
