CEBU, Philippines - A 26-year-old construction worker was arrested for allegedly robbing and attempting to kill a taxi driver yesterday along G. Ouano Street in Barangay Alang-Alang, Mandaue City.

Suspect Jimboy Esnardo of Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City allegedly tried to kill Core Nudalo, 41, driver of Holiday Taxi, after the driver fought during the robbery.

According to Police Officer 2 Jason Flor of Centro Police Station, the suspect flagged down the taxi at his workplace at Menzi Building in Barangay Pajo and asked the driver to be brought home.

But upon reaching Barangay Alang-Alang, the suspect allegedly declared a holdup and told the driver "Nagkinahanglan kog kwarta bay (I need money)" while pointing at him a knife.

However, the driver fought with him.

The suspect managed to stab the driver on his head but the latter eventually got hold of him.

Policemen responded and arrested the suspect.

At the police station, the suspect denied robbing the driver, saying they were arguing over the direction.

He said the driver was taking the wrong direction in bringing him home, which irked and led him in stabbing the victim.

"Wala man ko mangawat ma'am. Gapahatod man ko ato's taxi unya 'taka man og hunong mao 'to nag-away 'mi," he said.

Aside from the knife, a small pack of suspected shabu was also reportedly seized from the suspect.

This was also denied by the suspect.

"Pataka man lang na sila. Wa man ko kita nga naa sila'y nakuha gikan sa bulsa nga shabu. Wa man ko'y shabu," he said.

The driver, a resident of Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City, had his minor stab wound to the head. — (FREEMAN)
