No new traffic scheme for some Lapu-Lapu roads

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - No new traffic scheme will be implemented at the intersection of Maximo V. Patalinjug Avenue and Manuel L. Quezon Road in Lapu-Lapu City, even after the City Traffic Management Systems initiated a whole day dry run last Saturday for the possible implementation of a new traffic system.

Mayor Paz Radaza said yesterday that she will deploy several CTMS personnel at the intersection located near the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge because she thinks that motorists passing the area are the same motorists that use the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

"Mobutang una ko og daghan tawo para sa pagtan-aw sa mga sakyanan. I think mao ra man gihapon ni nga mga sakyanan. Imo lang gibalhin, gi-reroute naka-create lang og something," Radaza said.

Radaza, who heard a few complaints after the dry run, said she instructed CTMS Chief Frank Brazil to go around the intersection and to identify congested or blockage points.

"Ako giingnan si Frank Brazil nga to go around the place ug tan-awon og asa ang mga choke points sa mga sakyanan. Unya ako gyud gipa-count nila og unsay volume (sa traffic) at a certain time," Radaza said.

The city government is currently eyeing a solution in the improvement of the traffic situation, according to Radaza.

Radaza said traffic personnel should make sure that vehicles and motorcycles flow smoothly in the area.

"Ato gyud gitan-aw na mairog o mapalabay nato (ang mga vehicles). Gitan-aw sad nato nga mo-release ta sometimes (vehicles) kung luag-luag na (ang street)," Radaza said.

Last Saturday, Brazil conducted a run-through of vehicles on a different traffic route - opening a single lane from MVP going to the old bridge and making all vehicles from the old bridge turn right going to the city's public market, exiting Sangi Road.

Congested traffic was felt from Basak-Marigondon Road to MVP Avenue around 11 a.m. but eventually dissolved at the end of the intersection.

Traffic congestion was also felt at the foot of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge due to a vehicular accident on the side of Mandaue City around 3 in the afternoon, which made vehicles proceed to the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge. — (FREEMAN)
