CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Provincial Government has shelled out at least P747-million financial assistance since the administration of Governor Hilario Davide III assumed office in 2013.

The amount was downloaded to different local government units to empower them in realizing their various programs, said the Provincial Information Office in a press statement. It covered the period from the middle of 2013 to December 2015.

The financial assistance is also part of the administration's advocacy campaign dubbed as "Kalambuan sa Mata'g Sugbuanon (Progress for each Cebuano)."

The information office said the financial aid is on top of the projects implemented by frontline departments of the province as well as programs funded by the national government and other foreign financial institutions.

Among the seven districts of Cebu, the Fifth District received the lion's share amounting to P230.4 million.

The Fifth District is composed of Danao City, Borbon, Carmen, Catmon, Compostela, Liloan, Pilar, Poro, San Francisco, Sogod, and Tudela.

The towns of Poro and Pilar, both in Camotes Island, are among the biggest beneficiaries of the financial aid with P27.3 and P24.1 million, respectively. They were followed by Sogod which got P26.3 million.

Projects undertaken in Pilar included road rehabilitation and concreting, including its circumferential freeway worth P15 million. It also received P3 million to fund the repairs of roads which were damaged by typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

In Poro, the bulk of the financial assistance was poured to infrastructure and countryside development projects. The amount for road and bridge repair projects reached P4.9 million. Also, the town got P2 million for the rehabilitation and expansion of its municipal building; P3M for reclamation project; P2.5M for heavy equipment and P2M for public market renovation.

The Second District followed with P201.2 million, then Third District (P129.1 million), Sixth District (P74 million), and Fourth District (P66.2 million).

Meanwhile, the Capitol also helped other LGUs to undertake their various projects.

In Tuburan, for an instance, the Capitol provided P15 million for the concreting of a portion of the farm to market road of the Alegria-Cabangcalan. At least P9 million was also downloaded to the municipality for the same type of work for Kabangkalan and Cogon-Alegria roads.

The Capitol contributed P15 million for the renovation of Polambato port in Bogo City.

Bogo also received P7-million assistance for road opening of relocation sites and other infrastructure projects.

In Consolacion, two major projects received financial support - the concreting of Barangay Sacsac road (P6 million), and construction of a drainage system and repair of the Jugan-Tayod road (P5 million).

The Capitol also downloaded funds for road improvements in Cordova especially the construction of the P8-million coastal road, which was seen to give convenience to the fishermen in transporting their catch.

Rehabilitation and construction of waterworks systems in various towns also got assistance from the Capitol. Alcoy received P5 million for the project, Santander (P3.7M), Carcar City (P1.5M), Tabuelan (P3M), Sogod (P3.5M), and Tudela (P3M). — (FREEMAN)
