Cops on alert for Valentine’s

Ma. Fatima R. Secuya - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Police Office is beefing up the security in parks and other areas where people are expected to gather today to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

CCPO director Senior Superintendent Benjamin Santos directed all station commanders to patrol in areas within their jurisdiction that people may converge today.

Superintendent Oscar Monterroyo, chief of CCPO-Police Community Relations Branch, said Santos wanted to ensure that people celebrating heart’s day in places like Plaza Independencia, South Road Properties, and Fuente Osmeña are safe.

“Ang kasagaran man gyud nga adtoan ana kanang mga parks like sa Plaza Independencia, Fuente, South Road Properties. So naa gyud na’y policemen nga i-detail diha,” Monterroyo said.

He said they are expecting more people in these areas today compared to the previous Valentine’s Day celebrations since it falls on a Sunday.

Monterroyo said Mobile Patrol Group personnel were required to conduct roving in areas where there are hotels, motels, and pension houses.

He reminded the public to be vigilant because criminal elements may also take advantage of the occasion.

“I know nga tradition man gyud na nato nga manuroy kung ingon ani nga okasyon pero hangyo lang pud sa di lang pud sila magpagabii para malikayan na lang ang mga insidente kay daghan pud baya diha ang nag-atang ra,” said Monterroyo.

Monterroyo also warned lovers not to display too much affection in public because indecent acts are prohibited. Those who will be caught doing it in public areas will be charged with alarm and scandal.

Think of your future

Meanwhile, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma reminded young people to think of their future in order to have a beautiful and joyful life.

“For young people, ang ilang huna-huna nga ang Valentine’s Day is an opportunity of having a partner in life. Being young is a gift.  Think of your future,” said Palma.

Palma said that Valentine’s Day is not for pre-marital sex but rather an opportunity to thank everyone for their love like God, parents, teachers, friends, among others.

“Think of those who really love you in many wonderful ways like God, your parents, your teachers, your friends in making our lives beautiful. These are all part of Valentine’s Day,” said Palma. — with Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/FPL (FREEMAN)
