CEBU, Philippines - Six centenarians will be honored by the Cebu City government on the occasion of its 79th Founding Anniversary.

The city government has earmarked P600,000 for the monetary award at P100,000 each, which will be charged against the City Sponsored Activities.

Councilor Leah Ouano Japson, chairperson of the committee on social services, sponsored the resolution giving cash incentives to  Filomena Tariman of Barangay Pit-os; Genara Bacolod of Barangay Labangon; Leodegaria Tabal of Barangay Bonbon; Graciana Adlawan of Barangay Pung-ol Sibugay; Mercedes Franco of Barangay Capitol Site; and  Nicanor Labao of Barangay Basak San Nicolas.

The resolution was unanimously approved by the members of the City Council during its regular session yesterday.

This is not the first time the city government granted monetary rewards to centenarians who have been residents of the city for at least 10 years. The giving of cash award was established through the passage of City Ordinance 2235, also known as “An Ordinance Conferring the Centenary Senior Citizens’ Award to Qualified Senior Citizens on October of Each Year.”

Most of the six qualified senior citizens are 100 years old except for Tariman who is 101 years old.

Those that can qualify for the recognition, as stipulated under Section 2 of CO 2235, are senior citizens who are 100 years old and above and must be a bonafide resident of Cebu City for the past 10 years.

The P100,000 cash gift will be handed over during the formal awarding ceremony on February 24 in time for the city’s Charter Day celebrations. — (FREEMAN)
