94 ‘fail to meet’ voter requisites

CEBU, Philippines - Some barangay captains in Ginatilan town have challenged the applications for registration of 94 persons for allegedly failing to meet the required residency period, the Commission on Elections-Cebu disclosed yesterday.

Lawyer Ferdinand Gujilde, Comelec-Cebu election officer, said the Election Registration Board (ERB) is expected to come up with a decision on the fate of the 94 voter applicants today.

“Whether to grant the opposition or to sustain the application,” he told reporters.

He said the barangay captains in Palanas, Guiwanon and Poblacion filed the opposition on the grounds that these 94 applicants lack residence.

Residency for at least one year in the Philippines and at least six months, immediately preceding the national and local elections, in the place wherein he/she desires to vote is among the requirements for a person to become eligible to register and vote.

The voter registration ran from May 2014 until October 31 this year.

As of October 31, Cebu recorded a total of 2.6 million registered voters.

The figure is not yet final since the applications for registration will still be subject for further action, whether to be approved or disapproved by the ERB. (FREEMAN)
