PB committee backs Argao smoking plan

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines- The Provincial Board’s committee on public health and social welfare has endorsed an ordinance in Argao that seeks to regulate smoking in the town.

“The Smoking Regulation Ordinance of Argao is enacted for the purpose of safeguarding public health, instituting a balanced policy whereby the use of tobacco products shall be regulated in order to promote the right to health of the people,” reads the committee’s recommendation, which was forwarded to the Board for approval.

The committee also supports Argao’s aim to protect the health of the non-smokers when in public places or areas that are usually teeming with smokers. The report was signed by committee chairman Peter Caldero, vice chairman Raul Alcoseba and members Grecilda Sanchez and Jude Thaddeus Sybico.

The Argao town council recently approved the Smoking Regulation Ordinance, which will put more teeth on Republic Act 9211 or the Tobacco Regulations Act.

Under RA 9211, it is prohibited to smoke in schools, youth hostels and recreational facilities for minors, elevators, stairwells, gas stations or any area with combustible items. Also non-smoking places are public and private hospitals and health centers, public terminals, restaurants except for separate smoking areas and food preparation areas.

Argao’s ordinance mirrors the law but adds regulation on the sale of cigarettes and tobacco in the town.  (FREEMAN)
