Man shot dead, another hurt by ‘drunk’ neighbor

CEBU, Philippines - A man died while another one was injured after they were shot by an allegedly drunk neighbor Friday night in Barangay Macaas, Catmon.

Brian Jacalan, 28, died of multiple gunshot wounds while his neighbor Ronnie Querobin, 43, who tried to save him from the suspect, is being treated for a gunshot wound in the arm.

Suspect Teodosio Ma-lingin, 35, was later arrested in a road block while he was trying to escape after shooting the victims.

Investigation showed that Jacalan and Malingin figured in a heated argument prior to the incident.

According to Police Officer 2 Vircelito Debulosan of Catmon Police, the victim and the suspect were heading home after watching a cockfight in the nearby Barangay Catmon-Daan when they reportedly fi-gured in a verbal tussle when they reached Barangay Macaas, outside Querobin’s house.

The two were allegedly arguing over money.

Querobin alleged that Malingin, who was apparently drunk, pulled out a gun and pointed it to Jacalan.

Jacalan raised his hands and pleaded for his life while Querobin tried to pacify Malingin and told him not to shoot the victim.

However, the suspect did not heed and shot Jacalan several times.

Querobin saw the victim fell to the ground and for fear that the suspect would shoot him next, he ran as fast as he could to get away, but the suspect also shot him, hitting his left arm.

Jacalan was brought to Juan Dosado Memorial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival while Querobin was brought to a hospital in Cebu City for further medical treatment.

The suspect tried to escape by riding on a minibus but a concerned citizen contacted Catmon Police through its mobile hotline and told them about the suspect and the details of the bus.

The police immediately established a road block which resulted to the suspect’s arrest.

The suspect, who did not resist arrest, was seized with a cal. 45 pistol with ammunition.

He is now detained at Catmon Police Station and will face charges for murder for shooting Jacalan dead and for also shooting and injuring Querobin.  (FREEMAN)
