CEBU, Philippines - A tropical storm is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Friday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that the looming weather disturbance will be named “Neneng” (Phanfone) once it has entered the PAR.

Pagasa-Visayas chief Oscar Tabada told The FREEMAN that it is not expected to directly affect the country and is not expected to make landfall.

“Layo ra man gud kaayo siya. Mosulod siya sa PAR pero kadiyot ra gyod,” he said.

In a report of the Philippine STAR, data from the United State Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center show that the tropical storm packs maximum sustained winds of 83 kilometers per hour with gustiness of up to 101.86 kph.

He added that the afternoon rains being felt by some areas in Visayas, including Cebu, were brought on by the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

Western Visayas, CARAGA, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula and Davao region will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, as reported by Pagasa.

Light to moderate winds blowing from the northeast to northwest will prevail over Luzon and coming from the northwest to west over Visayas and Mindanao while the coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate.

Even with the rainy weather yesterday, Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said there is no low pressure area.

CCDRRMC head David Tumulak said as the city will experience thunderstorms, lightning, and rainshowers until the weekend, people should stay alert.

“Since mohatag man siya og lightning, dapat alerto atong katawhan sa ilang appliances kay delikado gyod siya,” he added.

Tumulak said that there were no reported floods and landslides because of the weather.  –(FREEMAN)
