Everybody needs to "walk the talk" and do their share

CEBU, Philippines - Hazel Arceo, CRM Coordinator of EcoGov, explains that “When fishers walk their talk, it is a very powerful deterrent to their fellow fishers who may be inclined to destructive practices. One sees in the fish wardens of Pilar a strong commitment to make their efforts bear fruit and slowly they are being rewarded for their efforts through healthier habitats that yield more fish for them and their families.”

Arceo expresses “a great hope in what Pilar can do to reverse the decline in the status of their coastal and marine habitats.” “Pilar has what it takes to ensure that there will be food from the sea for the next generation to enjoy. They are fiercely dedicated to sustaining the PMMP,” she says.

Determination and dedication to make it work do count among the top requisites of successful MPA management. Pilar is blessed to have both in LGU and barangay officials and community volunteers. 

The local government provides human and financial resources for various activities that has helped advance the PMMP over the years. It is active in contributing to a Camotes Sea-wide initiative called the Camotes Sea Coastal Resource Management Council (CSCRMC). Through the council, the LGU coordinates with neighboring municipalities to strengthen law enforcement, information, education and communication.

Meanwhile, eight fish wardens, “Governor” included, give flesh to CRM policies on the ground, and help protect the PMMP round-the-clock. “Governor” says, “Ako gayud ning unongan ang among marine sanctuary. Hangtod madala sa akong lawas, bisan hilantan pa ko, naa ra ko gihapon. Nasayod na man god ko unsa kamahinungdanon kini alang sa pagpahiuli sa among kadagatan.” (I will definitely guard the marine sanctuary. For as long as I can physically stand the challenges, I will stand by it. That’s because I know how important it is to the rehabilitation of our seas.)   (FREEMAN NEWS)
