Coffee on Sunday

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — I enjoy coffee. Not as much because I like the taste as because I enjoy sipping while my mind wanders. It’s like everymouthful summons various thoughts.

Yes, I have coffee anytime. No, not the expensive gourmet-type coffee. I have three-in-one sachets ready in my drawer at the office and in a jar in the kitchen at home.

Coffee has become a habit with me. When I’m stressed at work, I quickly get me a cup. Theoretically, caffeine is supposed to add to the stress, but it works the opposite with me. Coffee relaxes me, perhaps because it allows my mind to go free.

Between having it hot or cold, I like my coffee hot. It’s what I’m used to. It’s the aroma in hot coffee that gives me the full coffee experience. I love the sight of steam flying away from my cup.

Of all the days of the week, my best coffee is on a Sunday. It’s the same instant coffee, actually. But coffee, to me, is just best on Sunday.

It’s hard to explain. Maybe because there’s no explanation for it, in the first place. It’s just that my best coffee in on Sundays.

It could be because I have so much free time on Sundays. It’s a free day for me; I don’t have work. And so I don’t have to rush through my cup of hot coffee.

Back at the office, coffee time shall be confined to a few short minutes. The 15-minute break feels much shorter with my awareness that there’s work waiting to be done. More so, because officemates tend to take their coffee breaks together – and chitchat often takes over self-reflection.

At home, I could always kick the minutes further. And since I live alone, my mind can really take flight as I enjoy my coffee. Especially on a day like today… oh, there’s always my cup waiting to be filled!
