Dark Acne Scars

The Freeman

After the depressing stage of acne, most Filipinos suffer from post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or, to make it simple, dark acne scars. The reason is the Asian skin type, which easily darkens after any inflammation or trauma. It usually appear in all shades of brown – from the lightest to the darkest brown.

Even if the acne or pimple is already healed, the visible dark scars usually make patients feel that they still have lots to conceal. Dark post-acne scars becomes a debilitating dilemna for most patients specially when they are applying for work or preparing for an important event. Men are especially bothered because they do not use concealers to cover it up. Young women and students find it tedious to use a lot of cosmetics everyday just to cover up the dark marks.

There are several treatments that can be done for dark acne scars. I will be writing several articles on all the options available.

The most effective I have tried so far in my 23 years of practice is the laser peel. This can be adjusted to suit every age and skin type. Lasers also rejuvenate the skin so it leaves skin smoother and younger looking after treatments.

I personally perform the procedure to patients. Post-laser peel products are then prescribed together with maintenance for home use. There is absolutely no downtime involved with this procedure. The patient can wear makeup right the following day. He or she can swim – with sunblock of course.

The patient can also do workout and perspire. There’s no visible skin peeling off after the procedure. Best part of it is stimulating new collagen formation and exfoliating dead skin cells leaving skin lighter in color and fresh looking. One just has to make sure the laser specialist is legitimate and experienced.
