A Millennial’s Guide to Gabi sa Kabilin 2017

CEBU, Philippines - Trying to squeeze out the most of the last days of summer in Cebu? Tonight’s Gabii sa Kabilin has got you covered! With 27 museums and heritage sites opening their doors from 6 p.m. until midnight, you are sure to have a blast to the past and an immersion with local culture  with various displays at participating sites – whether it be pre-colonial artifacts, cultural garbs, or even ancient relics.

But you’re probably wondering how you can possibly traverse the cities of Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue and Lapulapu in just six hours, to visit all the sites. Seems impossible? Well, it is. In fact, you are encouraged to only visit the museums that interest you.

Here are a few tips in order to maximize your experience of this once-a-year evening:

? Eat up. Participating GSK sites are open from 6 p.m. until midnight. Eat a good meal before heading out. If you suddenly feel hungry, you may take a short detour to the food stalls located near the sites to fill you up for the rest of the night.

? Comfort over fashion. Your trip requires lots of walking. The latest heels and leather jackets may look cool but they’ll do you no good on a night like this. Wear something breathable and light so you can freely move around.

? Hold on to your ticket. Visitors on Gabii sa Kabilin are issued a ticket that gives them hassle-free access to the participating museums. So you have to be careful not to lose your ticket.

? Hydrate. Avoid scaly skin and chapped lips in selfies by drinking up. Always keep a tumbler of water handy, as walking between sites can take a toll on your body.

? Pack smart. Do not bring too much, just the things you need – water, snacks, face towel, cellphone, a spare shirt, and an umbrella. A bag full of unnecessary stuff things can be such a burden to carry around.

? Plan your night.  As much as you want to let loose your inner Dora, it’s smart to research about the museums that suits your fancy. You wouldn’t want to waste your six hours dawdling on the streets and missing out on some nice sites. But don’t feel bad in not being able to visit all the sites during this one night; Gabii sa Kabilin comes around every year.

? Click away!  The sights and activities that you may come upon during the Gabii sa Kabilin may strike you as something memorable. You may want to capture the moment for posterity or to share with loved ones. So, go ahead and take a selfie – but make sure to first ask permission from designated personnel as some sites are sensitive to flash photography. (FREEMAN)
