DepEd: Keep graduation rites simple, meaningful
MANILA, Philippines - Education Secretary Leonor Briones has reminded all elementary and high schools across the country to keep the graduation rites of students meaningful but simple.
In a department order, Briones said graduation or moving up ceremonies should be scheduled on or before April 7 except in divisions or regions with an approved extended school year.
Grades 6 and 12 students will take part in graduation rites, while Grade 10 students will participate in a moving up ceremony where they will receive junior high school completion certificates in lieu of diplomas.
“Graduation rites should be simple but meaningful, which encourage civil rights, a sense of community and personal responsibility,” she said.
“While these rites mark a milestone in the life of the learners, these should be conducted without excessive spending, extravagant attire or extraordinary venue,” she added.
The secretary reminded schools not to use non-academic projects such as field trips, film showings and junior-senior promenade nights as mandatory requirements for graduation or completion.
She also directed public schools not to collect any kind of fee or contribution for the ceremonies.
“The end of school year rites and moving up or closing ceremony should be conducted in an appropriate solemn ceremony befitting the learners and their parents and shall not be used as a political platform,” she said.
