Make other people's day

LIFE'S ESSENCE - Katherine R. Oyson - The Freeman

Shashi Saini of the Values.com website exclaims, “Let me tell you one real story that happened a year ago. I was driving in a heavy rain, it was so heavy that I got totally blind so I stopped at a gas station. From a parking lot to the office of that station, I walked on foot as rain and thunder scared me not to stay in the car. When it did not stop for two hours, I told the owner to drive me home and I’ll pay him. He was nobody to me but he closed his station, dropped me home in that heavy rain, and did not ask any payment. I was scared but he did not ask any question. I was telling him that my husband was at work and he does not attend calls from home during work. The next day, I took my car from his shop and gave him 20 dollars. He could not say ‘no' as I  hugged him with heart full of gratitude and thanks.  Angels do not live in heaven, they are here; right around us. Have faith in humans; they are angels too.”

I remember when I was in New Zealand while waiting for my boarding pass, the in-charge told me to wait. I realized that after some few hours of waiting almost all the passengers were on board. When I asked the in-charge when I would have my boarding pass, she replied with a smile. She said, “Since you  are patient, I’ll placed you in the business class, instead of the economy.” I was so overwhelmed with joy.

In this busy world, what are we going to do to make other people’s day? Here are suggestions from Henrick Edberg of the positivity blog:

Give a sincere compliment. Many positive things tend to go unsaid. So give someone a sincere compliment today. It can mean especially much if it’s for something that is close to the other person’s heart . Or something he or she been putting in a good effort with like getting into better shape for the last few months.

Let someone into your lane while driving. It can unstress his or her day quite a bit.

Hold the door open for extra seconds. It doesn’t take much of an effort but it can put a smile on someone’s face.

Express your gratitude for what is too often asked for granted. Like the food they cook, how they keep their job consistently each and every day, or how they are there to listen when you need them

Encourage. The world can be tough and discouraging place at times. So encourage someone who is in a negative situation at the moment. Add your own perhaps more grounded and optimistic perspective on the situation to lessen his or her worries and perhaps exaggerated fears.

Smile. Even if you’re only spending 30 seconds on talking to the cashier or someone else it makes them feel better.

Give a hug. It unstresses and it can disrupt negative thoughts and change someone’s mood surprisingly quickly.

Say “Please” and “ Thank you”. This one  is so simple and easy. It’s a small token  of gratitude for the things we do for each other everyday.
