The intricacies of the beautiful crochet

Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Picot chains, treble patterns and cross double crochet links were the foremost features of the recent "Love and Passementerie" fashion presentation at the Grand Ballroom of Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.  The occasion drew particular attention to the intricacies of crochet, one of the world's endearing crafts.

The show presented more than ten bridal gowns designed by master Cebuana outfitter Jojo Martinez, who utilized variations of white crochet chains as embellishments for cuts of organza and tulle.

Taking its name from the art of making fine appliques and trimmings for clothes or furnishings known as "passementerie," the event proved crochet's value in the making of elegantly detailed fineries, underscoring the craft's competence as a rival to embroidery in the arena of intricate designs.

Martinez's affinity to gowns that highlight the aesthetic value of crochet is likely to rekindle interest in the craft among the haute-couture circles. As "Love and Passementerie" has set the spotlight on crochet, it becomes clear, once again, that beautiful fashion is not limited to what is trendy - that time-proven aesthetic traditions are hardly affected by the changing times and tastes.
