Nurturing the Gift of Music

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Music has a way of connecting people. It brings about emotional experiences. It is a language that does not require words.

Very few people, though, can claim to be innately musically gifted. Few people are born with a talent for music. Fortunately, musical skills can be learned, and often it's hard to tell the difference.

Even among the naturally gifted, it is hard to spot musical talent at an early age. To be sure that budding musical talent is properly nurtured, it is advisable to start kids early in music training. This is the very idea behind the establishment of Cebu Music Learning Center.

Couple Denis and Sandra Namocatcat thought of incorporating music training in the education of young people. Dennis graduated Bachelor of Music Major in Piano from Silliman University, and had worked as pianist/guitarist and singer. The couple figured out he has both academic background and actual experience and so they ventured into starting a school that highlights music as part of the educational experience of students.

It was not easy, Sandra said, how the school started. But their combined musical passion saw them through the difficult start. And they persisted as the years passed. In due time they were able to expand the school. From simply offering piano lessons, more classes were soon added in response to growing demands.

Today, Cebu Music Learning Center has two branches in the city - the Banawa-Guadalupe and Talamban branches. There have since been year-round programs - from dancing lessons to art tutorials. And as the school celebrates its 16th year anniversary this month, for the very first time, the school is now having an Adult Music Recital, to inspire grownups to hone their musical ability.

Classes in indigenous/neo-ethnic musical instruments, such as "tongatong," are also offered. Every now and then, music teachers from abroad come and conduct special classes. The school invites these skilled musicians and mentors to share their knowledge with the students.

Cebu Music Learning Center offers Violin Lessons (for individuals and groups), Music Adventure Program (for 2 ½ o 4 ½ year-olds), Center Stage for voice development and stage performance, Intensive Vocal Training, Music Theory Classes, Dance Classes: Hi-hop for Children, Teens and Adults and Modern Dance (for 3 to 6 year-olds, 7 year-olds and older), Art Classes, Arts and Crafts, Playgroup Programs (for 1½ to 4½ year-olds) and Music Lessons: Piano, Guitar, Drums, Cello, Woodwinds and Brasses (for individuals).

More information is available at Facebook page Cebu Music Learning Center Official FB. Inquiries may also be directed to Ms. Beth (Banawa-Guadalupe branch) at (032) 253- 5871 / 0922 888 5086 or to Ms. Queenie (Talamban branch) at (032) 417-1037 / 0922 821 6068.

It only takes interest and a good teacher to bring out the musician in every one. (FREEMAN)
