Importance of a proper dental care

Sarah Nengasca - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Dental health is the window to one's overall health. Oral care literature has it that the condition of the mouth mirrors a person's overall wellness, given the fact that most systemic diseases have oral manifestations. Just as a normal sore throat could indicate a high fever the next day, what seemed to be a normal toothache could mean the worst stage of an oral cancer.

In line with the country's commemoration of the Oral Health Month and the celebration of the feast of St. Apollonia, the patroness of dentistry, this month of February, the community of dentists, orthodontists and other oral health care providers persistently continues their campaign in instilling public awareness on the importance of oral health care.

Dental practitioners have reiterated the necessity of paying special attention not only to having a mouth that smells good or teeth that looks straight and clean - but also for a total oral hygiene. The website www.theschulhofcenter.com lists down some of the most common signs of good oral health.

Fresh breath. More than just a social blunder, halitosis, (colloquially called bad breath) can indicate more serious oral health problems. While there are different causes of bad breath, chronic halitosis can be due to gingivitis or periodontal disease, experts say. If left untreated, the conditions that cause halitosis can lead to eventual tooth loss.

Unstained teeth. Having yellow teeth due to food stains, tobacco use, and beverage intake such as that of coffee, tea, and wine does not only look unpleasant; they can be considered unhealthy. Teeth that are crooked can be harder to clean, so adults with this problem may want to consult an orthodontist about ways to straighten them.

Healthy gums. Unhealthy gums can cause bad breath. Moreover, research shows that gingivitis in pregnant women is related to premature birth and low birth weight. While bleeding and receding gums could indicate lack of proper oral care, they can also be due to a misaligned bite.

Straight teeth. Sporting great-looking teeth does not really count as everything, but they are important when it comes to dental health. Crooked teeth make it difficult for one to chew properly.

Healthy and adequate saliva. A dry mouth may also be a factor of having a bad breath, but more than that, lack of adequate saliva can present an obstacle in achieving the best possible oral health condition. Saliva works to begin the digestive process during eating and drinking. Aside from that, it also functions in breaking down foods; its saliva enzymes have a protective quality that constantly fights bad bacteria. Experts advise to stay properly hydrated in order to produce adequate amounts of saliva.

Oral health care is a top priority. For proper maintenance, it is advisable to submit oneself for examination by a dentist and have one's teeth cleaned regularly. Aside from boosting one's confidence, oral health sure has lots of positive effects in one's day-to-day life experience.   (FREEMAN)
