In the kingdom of great coral

KIDSTUFF - Jess Erl N. Delgado - The Freeman

In the kingdom of the Great Coral is a seahorse named Blumane, an orphan after his parents died while trying to save him and his siblings from Sting, the manta ray. Sting eats seahorses. Many have died because of him.

Blumane is a hard-headed seahorse. The other seahorses don’t like him, they don’t like his ways. In fact, he has spent time in prison at the Great Coral, for many infractions on the kingdom’s laws. But as soon as he gets free, he is back in his old ways again.

Blumane is a very adventurous creature. Sometimes he goes way beyond the borders of the Great Coral. Because of his frequent defiance of the kingdom’s laws, he and the king Archenly are not in good terms. The thing that the king hates the most is when Blumane ventures outside of the kingdom.

One day Blumane does it again. He swims past the kingdom borders and up towards the sea surface. This is a forbidden area, especially for young seahorses like him. But, as always, Blumane doesn’t seem to care.

He swims farther more and comes near the shore. Then he is terrified as he looks around.  There are dead fishes floating everywhere. He sees an oily, ugly-colored fluid on the surrounding water surface. He tries to get away from the oily matter, and as he turns he notices that the sea grass in the vicinity have lost their vibrant color.

Now Blumane all the more wants to quickly get away from that place. But he can’t go so fast because of the many pieces of trash in the water. Many times, he bumps into a trash and becomes entangled in it, and has to struggle to get himself free every time.

He is very alarmed to see that both the oily matter on the sea surface and the trash are beginning to sink down and taken deeper by the water current. Blumane knows that if it is not stopped in time, the oily matter and the trash will soon reached the Great Coral. He knows, too, that if it happens, the entire kingdom will face death, just like the dead fishes he saw earlier.

As soon as he is free from the trash, Blumane swims as fast as he can back to the kingdom. He barges into the king Archenly’s chamber. The king is surprised and angered by the sudden entry and calls the palace guards to take Blumane away. But Blumane pleads with the king to hear him out, and the king heeds.

Upon hearing Blumane’s story, the king’s anger is replaced with alarm. So the king orders the soldiers instead to go with Blumane to prevent the flow of the oily matter and the trash from reaching the kingdom borders. The group leaves in a hurry.

Blumane and the soldiers hold together to block the menace from coming close to the Great Coral. They try so hard for a while, risking their lives in the struggle, until the water current begins to change direction. They push the big lump of oily matter and trash to go with the water current – away from the kingdom’s border!

The Great Coral is saved from imminent doom. Now Blumane understands why young seahorses are forbidden from going beyond the kingdom’s borders. And now he has become more responsible and law-abiding.

The king appoints Blumane as officer of the Great Coral’s defense. And because of his changed ways, Blumane has come to be endeared by everyone throughout the kingdom.  Everyone feels safe and protected with him around.
