CEBU, Philippines — The eldest among the 54 Binibining Cebu candidates at 26 years old, Warlyn sees her “Ate” status as an opportunity to “learn new things from the young ones.” More than her age a liability amongst upstarts, she deems her entry as proof how it is never too late to take a stab at one’s dream.

But being a beauty queen wasn’t always something Warlyn aspired for, until someone pushed her to unleash her highest potential. And so, step out of what’s ordinary and walk through the water in faith she did.

Warlyn considers it a blessing to be the candidate who will highlight Cebu City South, because she is raring to showcase more of what her hometown has to offer “especially that most people only know the existence of SM Seaside.” Her first tartanilla ride in Pasil – an experience she thinks many locals have yet to try for themselves – has been one of her fondest memories that she’d like to share to the rest of the world.

There’s really only one Cebu City, but Warlyn is of the opinion that dividing it into North and South is just right. “Aside from the fact that Guadalupe River divides the north and south district of Cebu City, I believe the division is for the proper sectionalization of governance and responsibilities,” she offers. “Cebu has 80 barangays: 46 in the North and 34 in the South. It’s a huge number that division of Cebu City into North and South can only be the most efficient way for proper management.”

On what’s so great about Cebu City South, Warlyn has this to say: “Cebu City South’s homogenous mixture of serene yet busy streets, tranquil yet unrelenting pace for advancement makes it so great that it should be singled out. Everything that you would want to look for in a place is already perfected in Cebu City South. However, no man is an island, so is my town. I still believe that all the municipalities and cities in Cebu must share the same applause as they are all contained in one great queen city of the South – Cebu City.”

A Medical Technology from Cebu Doctors’ University, Warlyn currently earns her keep as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at Singapore Diagnostics. Her colleagues have been mighty supportive, plotting her schedule well so she can attend to Bb. Cebu activities without the need to resign. “Pretty tough wearing too many hats at the same time, but bearable,” quips this enthusiast of swimming, free diving, driving, traveling, singing and reading.

For Warlyn, the best part of her job is being able to impart knowledge to those who know less on medical facts and being able to aid in the pre-diagnosis of patients, saving their lives as a behind-the-scene backbone of medicine.

“I’ve learned that science and faith need not be antithetical,” she offers. “In fact, the more I learn of the presence of minute living organisms, the more I am convinced that God exists.”

Medical Technology was supposed to be her stepping stone towards becoming a doctor, until she learned to love her current profession. She shares, “I went to medical school last year at UC School of Medicine but it only made things clear that my better interest goes with being a scientist than a doctor – working behind the scenes. In 10 years, I see myself as an employer providing jobs. My passion for business boils in my blood and breathes life to my soul. Provision of jobs will not only increase the economic growth of our nation, but will also decrease poverty.” (FREEMAN)
