PACE on full throttle for 3rd Tour de Cebu

THE STARTER - Lord Seno - The Freeman

Performance and Classic Enthusiast of Cebu (PACE) is all set to start the Tour de Cebu on October 14-16.

The Mille Miglia inspired event will be flagged off in SM Seaside City Cebu  and will tour the island of Bohol.

The event which is co-organized by Manila Sports Car Club (MSCC), was presented to the media last Friday at the Sky Hall of SM Seaside City Cebu.

Chris Aldeguer,  PACE head said that Sixty-five percent of the participants will come from Cebu, one participant from  Iloilo and another one from Davao. All in all, that will bring entries to forty.

He also said that the tour is still open to more entries as they are still sorting out the eligibilities of each entry . The tour only accepts sportcars 1972 or below. Some exceptions are cars with racing heritage or history and special cars that were owned by motoring personalities of the past.

As with the past two tours, the “touristic run”  will promote Bohol as a premier destination for tourist.

“One of the goals is to highlight the beauty of the Visayas.  The first two Tours, we went to the island of Negros,  through its key cities Dumaguete, Bacolod and San Carlos where there were beautiful coastal and mountain roads. Now we’re going to Bohol. The idea here is we are going to bring out the beauty of the islands and as well as the safety of driving in the islands,” said Chris Tio, a founding member of PACE.

Tio remembers  the inaugural event in 2014 as being a challenging one. “The first Tour de Cebu was quite historic. We did it in the middle of a typhoon. We were thinking whether or not to cancel the event, but most of the drivers from Manila were already here so we decided to go forward with the event. We did one day of heavy driving. We were able to do about 400 to 500 kilometers in the first day then we canceled it. I got to give it to the drivers  especially Chris (Aldeguer) here for keeping up and winning it without no roof and only goggles. The participants probably enjoyed it that much, the word spread. We soon got more entries in the 2nd Tour de Cebu.” Tio said.

Tour de Cebu is a regularity race based on time-distance-speed race  or  TSD rally,  a type of  motoring event  with the object of driving each segment of a  Course  in a specified  time  at a specified average  speed.  This means drivers will not be driving at breakneck speeds but rather on consistently average legal speeds, covering a certain course at the closest time given by the event officials. “You’re supposed to go through the map and figure out the ideal time settings. For example, reaching point A to point B must be achieved in 20 minutes. If your arrive 16 minutes, you will be penalized four minutes. If you arrive 25 minutes, you will be penalize for every minute over. It will be an on-time, all the time race,” said Tio.

The driver and co-driver with the least penalties wins the Tour.

The Tour has been participated by some famous celebrities such as Dominic Ochoa and Matteo Guidicelli and race director, Formula 3 Champion, Pepon Marave.
