Project Byline 4.0: Fame, Shame and Blame in Entertainment Journalism

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – With the buzz of controversies and scandals the entertainment industry continues to discuss today, the University of the Philippines Journalism Club (UPJC) has taken its stance to raise awareness among students on the significance of responsible journalism in the practice of entertainment reporting.

As part of the organization’s 59 years of critical thought and action, UPJC’s Project Byline 4.0, along with the theme: “Fame, Shame and Blame in Entertainment Journalism”, aims to tackle how media outfits in the Philippines handle reportage of entertainment news, exposes or scandals in show business. UPJC believes that this would help shed light on the pertinent issues of entertainment reporting, including how entertainment news is being reported in the mainstream media and how people respond to these reports.

Project Byline 4.0 began with an online campaign featuring controversies of public personalities and what should have been the right approach to these issues. This was followed by an exhibit on entertainment personalities who were involved in scandals and controversial issues. The exhibit, “Walk of Fame, Shame, and Blame”, will last until January 30 at the University of the Philippines-Diliman ASCAL walk (located between the Faculty Center and Palma Hall) and the Hall of Fame at AS Walk (located at the main walkway inside Palma Hall).

This January 30, a public forum entitled, “Glam(Or?)” will serve as the culminating activity of the campaign. The forum will be held at the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication Auditorium, from 4-7pm. A dynamic cast of speakers is expected to educate students from different universities. Among the speakers are UP Sociology professor Prof. Andoy Evangelista, Mr. Ricky Lo, Entertainment Editor and Columnist of The Philippine Star, and MultiAwarded TV Host Mr. Boy Abunda.
