Provincial campuses dominate most sustainable, eco-friendly schools

MANILA, Philippines — Campuses located in the provinces dominated the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)’s awards for “Most Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools of 2017.”

The nationwide annual competition, which started in 2009, aims to recognize educational institutions with the best eco-friendly and sustainable programs and practices.

Named as “Most Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools” for the elementary school category were Payao Elementary School in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental (first place); Bintawan South Elementary School in Villaverde, Nueva Vizcaya (second place) and Katangawan Central Elementary School in General Santos City (third place).

For the high school category, the national winners were Divisoria High School in Santiago City, Isabela (first place); Muntinlupa National High School in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila (second place) and Pinsao National High School in Baguio City (third place).

For the college category, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – North La Union Campus in Bacnotan, La Union won first place, followed by Western Philippines University in Aborlan, Palawan (second place) and Naval State University in Biliran (third place).

First-place winners received P50,000 each and additional P25,000 each for the Land Bank “Green Leadership Award.”

Second and third placers each received P40,000 and P30,000, respectively.
