DOST boosts R&D, taps young scientists from provinces

Rainier Allan Ronda - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is further strengthening its research and development (R&D) programs, this time tapping young scientists and researchers in schools, particularly in the provinces, to come up with new products and services.

Science Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said that the focus on the provinces is in line with President Duterte’s directive to work for regional development.

“The DOST, in line with the Duterte Administration’s thrust of regional development, focuses on creating new R&D centers in the regions or niche centers for innovation by providing grants, facilities and leadership programs that are linked to industries,” Dela Peña said.

The science chief revealed that the DOST fosters strong partnerships with state colleges and universities that act as R&D centers and innovation hubs in the provinces where the DOST matches the needs of the industries with research institutions.

He added that the DOST continuously works for convergence among stakeholders by supporting start-up businesses and linking them with business incubators and cooperators and forging institutional collaboration with other government agencies like the Department of Trade and Industry.
