Mapúa, MCL graduates surpass global English standards

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Graduates of the Mapúa University and its subsidiary Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) have surpassed the English communication skills requirements at par with globally accepted standards after adopting the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) ® tests for certification needed to meet the requirements of international corporations and five-star hospitality brands.

In school year 2015-2016, the average TOEIC Listening and Reading score of Mapúa graduates was 851 out of 990, and 863 out of 990 for Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL). Both scores are higher than the recommended scores of Marriott Manila for Front Office and Events, which is TOEIC 840, and of Dusit Thani Makati for Front Office, which is TOEIC 820

In addition, 94.02 percent of Mapúa graduates and 95.38 percent of MCL graduates met the recommended scores for engineers set by EEI Corporation.

Most encouraging of all, 99 percent of Mapúa and 100 percent of MCL graduates stated in a survey that they valued their TOEIC score, showing their commitment to being excellent engineers who can compete in the global workforce.

“We are pleased that our graduates meet not only the competencies needed for engineers, but also the requirements of five-star institutions, in terms of their language proficiency skills,” Mapúa University president and chief executive officer Reynaldo Vea said.

“I am pleased that our graduates meet the standards of industry which shows our commitment toward world-class graduates,” MCL vice president of academic affairs Dennis Tablante remarked.

The People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) and Hopkins International Partners conducted a two-year joint research project in 2015-2016 to find the necessary English proficiency level of graduates, by using the TOEIC® test results of several leading Philippine corporations in a number of industries like EEI for engineering, Startek (business process outsourcing) and Marriott Hotel Manila (hospitality), to name a few.

TOEIC® is the most widely recognized credential for English in the workplace with seven million test-takers a year in over 140 countries and used by over 15,000 organizations.
