MCWD: Rains caused low water supply

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Some residents within the franchise area of Metropolitan Cebu Water District have suffered low water pressure since Tuesday due to turbidity of its water sources.

“Ang impression man gud kay sige og uwan, dapat daghan og tubig. Ang nahitabo karon kay lubog atong water source. Kini kay tungod sa sige og uwan, ang tubig nga moadto sa dam nagdala man og lapok kay gamay na lang ang mga kahoy sa surrounding areas,” said MCWD spokesperson Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara.

Kara said that MCWD’s average daily water production is 222,000 cubic meters per day, but as of Wednesday, this has reduced to 203,000 cubic meters per day or a deficit of 19,000 cubic meter per day.

Kara said that one of its water sources, the Luyang River in Carmen town has an average daily production of 35,000 cubic meters daily but, currently, it only produced about 14,500 cubic meters per day.

With this scenario, residents in Northern Cebu like in Liloan, Compostela, Consolacion, Mandaue City, part of Lapu-Lapu City and in Cebu City barangays Mabolo and Carreta have experienced low pressure.

In addition, MCWD’s Buhisan Dam, which should be producing 5,000 cubic meters of water daily, is now producing only 2,100 cubic meters daily.

“We are hoping that the water turbidity will be cleared by Saturday para ma-normal na ang among water supply by Sunday,” said Kara.

“Naa sad hinoon mi technology nga mapadali ogclear ang lubog nga tubig,” she further said.  (FREEMAN)
