MANILA, Philippines – Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan has donated P50 million to his alma mater Ateneo de Manila University for the construction of its senior high school building.

Ateneo de Manila University president Jose Ramon Villarin said Pangilinan’s donation made it possible for the school to implement the K-12 program, which added two years to the basic education curriculum.

“This can help move education forward for the Filipino people especially at this crucial time when the country needs effective models of senior high school education,” Villarin said in a statement.

The university said Pangilinan, a graduate of AB Economics, gave Ateneo the opportunity to develop senior high school as a potential template and benchmark that other schools in the country can follow.

One of the wings of the senior high school building, which was completed in time for the school opening this year, will be named MVP Wing in recognition of the businessman.

Ateneo this year broke its all-male basic education program when it opened its senior high school program to both male and female students.

Pangilinan is the chairman of Philex Mining, Metro Pacific Investments Corp. and the PLDT Group of Companies, which counts media conglomerate MediaQuest Holdings as among its subsidiaries.

The STAR Group is part of MediaQuest Holdings.
