DepEd starts hiring senior high school teachers

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) has started the process of hiring new teachers for the senior high school (SHS) subjects that will be offered next year under the K to 12 program.

“This call is addressed to qualified and highly competent teachers, professionals, practitioners and experts who are interested in teaching the core curriculum and/or applied and specialized subjects under the four SHS tracks,” the announcement on the DepEd website stated.

The subjects under the core curriculum include language, humanities, communication, mathematics, science, social science, philosophy, and physical education and health. The four SHS tracks are academic, technical-vocational-livelihood, arts and design, and sports.

Applicants must submit their letter of intent to their school division offices (SDOs) on or before Oct. 30.

DepEd aims is to have a preliminary pool. Once the teaching positions are created, the SDOs will publish the vacancies for 10 days in compliance with the Publication Law. Candidates for the positions will be ranked following DepEd’s evaluation criteria and selection process, which will be issued at a later date, the announcement added.

DepEd identified over 5,000 schools nationwide that will offer Grades 11 and 12 starting next year.

For 2016, the Department of Budget and Management proposed a P19.322-billion fund for the creation of new positions in the DepEd. This fund, according to Education Secretary Armin Luistro, includes the creation of items for teaching and non-teaching personnel for the new grade levels.

Elvin Uy, DepEd assistant secretary for programs and projects, said that they proposed a budget for 43,000 teaching items even if DepEd only projects a need for 30,000 new teachers next year.

“That’s in case we have a huge enrolment,” he said.

Uy said the budget proposal includes funding for the creation of at least 6,000 non-teaching SHS personnel.
