Campus News: NYC, Japan Embassy launch childrens filmfest

The National Youth Commission (NYC), in cooperation with the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan based in the Philippines, launched an Asian International Children’s Film Festival 2017 where all Filipino high school students from Grades 10 to 12 were encouraged to join and submit their own three-minute video about the theme “School Teacher.” The top three finalists from the Philippines will be sent to Japan for the international division of the competition slated on November 25, 2017.

Free tuition law lauded

A tuition-free college education for the Filipino people is now a possibility.  The National Youth Commission (NYC) praised President Duterte for signing the Free Tertiary Education Act, which will provide free tuition fee for students enrolled in state universities and colleges.

Asec. James Caesar Ventura, NYC Commissioner in charge of the Committee on Education, said: “It has been a long-time battle for the Filipino youth to avail free tertiary education and as such, to be recognized by our government as a right. The youth were hopeful when the budget for free tuition coverage was included in the 2017 budget of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).”

The Republic Act 10931, or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, was signed by the President on Aug. 3, 2017.
