To help rebuild war-torn Marawi City, Japanese Foundation R.K. Shimzu donated desks and chairs to various schools affected by the clash on Aug. 25. Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones accepted the donation in a turnover ceremony held in the department’s central office in Pasig City.

UP Astrosoc holds storytelling for cancer patients

The University of the Philippines Astronomical Society recently held a storytelling event for young cancer patients at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center. The event was held to entertain and educate young cancer patients by telling them stories about astronomy using print and computer images. Activity sheets and other materials were provided to the patients for them to create their own stories about astronomy, especially about the moon and constellations.

Tayo Talks Manila inspires youth

TAYO Talks Manila, with the theme, “The Youth Project: Seek. Inspire. Empower,” was held on Sept. 2 at the Landbank Plaza in Malate, Manila. The event highlighted five TAYO alumni stories that aim to inspire Filipino youth by building networks of active youth communities in Metro Manila and providing opportunities for mentorship and collaboration. In attendance were Senator Bam Aquino, National Youth Commission (NYC) chairperson Aiza Seguerra, NYC commissioner Perci Cendaña, and Philippine Information Agency director-general Harold Clavite.

NYC: Latest stats on teen pregnancy in CAR alarming

Commissioner Perci Cendaña of the National Youth Commission presented the output of the Regional Teen Pregnancy Summit on Aug. 29, expressing alarm over the continuous increase of teen pregnancy cases in the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) to the Regional Staff Development Center Region 1 sub-committee on health, nutrition and population chaired by DoH-R1 director Dr. Myrna Cabotaje.

“The latest teen pregnancy statistics is even more alarming because the already high incidence in CAR continues to increase,” Cendaña said. The committee unanimously agreed to a resolution proposing to address the increasing percentage of teen pregnancy in the region.
