South Cotabato starts shipping papayas to Korea

MANILA, Philippines — The province of South Cotabato has started the initial shipment of papaya  to South Korea.

According to the Department of Agriculture-South Cotabato, farmers from Tupi in Koronadal have exported papaya to South Korea pursuant to a deal with Nurida Co., a distributor of fresh fruits in South Korea.

DA-Regional executive director Milagros Casis said the Tupi farmers led by RM Fruits as the consolidator,  would ship two to three metric tons of solo papaya on a weekly basis.

“We have been encouraging more farmers in the region to think of the bigger market and this is one of the priorities now of the department,” Casis said.

Apart from papaya, South Cotabato also exports carabao mangoes to Dubai through the Tulunan Mango and Fruits Growers’ Association of North Cotabato.

The Tupi farmers gained the connection after representatives of Nurida engaged with them at TienDA Farmers’ and Fishermen’s Outlet in Manila, a marketing program of the DA.
