Globe rolls out seafarer sim

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Globe Telecom Inc. has launched a SIM card to cater to seafarers and allow them to get special rates for calls and text messages.

In a statement, the Ayala-led telco said it partnered with the Luneta Seafarers Welfare Foundation (LUSWELF) for the Globe Seafarer SIM.

The Globe Seafarer SIM offers special rates from over 50 maritime destinations worldwide.

Through the SIM, seafarers can make calls for as low as P30 and send a message at P10 per text to Globe and TM subscribers in the Philippines.

The SIM is preactivated with international roaming and valid for one year.

“We are proud that almost a third of seafarers globally are Filipinos and we acknowledge their achievements and contributions. Our goal is to provide communication solutions that support the emotional needs of our seafarers who are longing for home and their families,” said Mike Frausing, senior adviser for Globe International Business Group.

The Globe Seafarer SIM is available at the Globe airport booths of the departure area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, as well as of the airports in Clark, Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo.

Seafarers can also get the SIM at the Globe booth in the Maritime Industry Authority and LUSWELF offices in Manila.

LUSWELF has served as a convergence point for seafarers since the 1980s.

“Globe is a valuable partner for us, supporting our programs and the needs of our seafarers,” said LUSWELF chair and chief executive officer Don Ramon  Bagatsing.

“They are also very engaged with the maritime industry. Their latest offering, the Globe Seafarer SIM, will address the communication needs of our seafarers abroad with an accessible, affordable and easy-to-use product,” he added.
