Maynilad bags top global energy mngm’t award

MANILA, Philippines -  West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. bagged a global award for its energy efficiency from the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), a worldwide forum that promotes transition to a greener economy.

The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led company was awarded the 2017 CEM Energy Management Insight Award for its excellent case study on the process and benefits of setting up an energy management system certified to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 50001.

As a global benchmark for climate and clean energy action, ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, which allows for easier integration of energy management into companies’ overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.

Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito Fernandez said the company’s efforts to enhance its energy efficiency enabled it to register reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and other related environmental impacts.

Maynilad was also able to generate savings in its electricity consumption because of its energy-reduction program.

“The award is a validation of Maynilad’s efforts to efficiently manage its energy systems. We hope that other businesses will also implement process improvements to help meet global energy and climate goals,” Fernandez said.

Maynilad’s ISO 50001-certified sites are its head office, La Mesa treatment plants, La Mesa, Villamor, Pagcor and Pasay pumping stations, and its Tondo sewage pumping plant.

Maynilad was among the 34 organizations – and one of two Philippine companies – worldwide that received the award in China.

The CEM is a high-level global forum that promotes policies and programs that advance clean energy technology, shares lessons learned and best practices, and encourages the transition to a global clean energy economy.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the country in terms of customer base. It serves the areas of Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, Malabon, and certain portions of Manila, Quezon City, Makati and Cavite.

Maynilad is owned and managed by Maynilad Water Holdings Co. Inc. a joint venture between Metro Pacific Investments Corp., DMCI Holdings Inc., and Marubeni Corp.
