Impeachment move vs President: ‘Plaint won’t prosper’ - Gov, Vice Gov

Kristine B. Quintas - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Although they do not have the same party with the country’s chief executive, Liberal Party stalwarts in Cebu do not think the impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte would prosper.

Both Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale believed that the complaint filed by Magdalo Partylist Representative Gary Alejano would not succeed at the House of Representatives.

“I sincerely doubt kung maka-first base na. I don’t know kung mosaler ba na,” Davide said.

Magpale, on the other hand, said the complaint was just a “political gimmick” and would not, even for just a bit, dent the momentum of the president’s war against illegal drugs.

“Tan-awon nato unsay dagan ana pero I doubt if that will (prosper) because the reality is politics. Majority (of the members in Congress are allies of the president). I don’t really think that will succeed,” she said.

In his complaint, Alejano highlighted graft and corruption allegedly committed by the president and his family.

In his 17-page impeachment complaint,  Alejano, an ally of vocal Duterte critic Senator Antonio Trillanes, alleged that the president has bank account that were not declared in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).

Alejano also alleged that Duterte has a number of bank accounts amounting to P2.2 billion. (FREEMAN)
